Not Much Figure Sales This Year

Monday, November 28th, 2011

I look at the holiday sales for anime figures, and I don’t see much on sale this year.  For example, last year ToysLogic had a buy one figure, get one half off deal.  This year, it’s just 15% off.

I’m surprised that HobbyLink Japan’s flat rate shipping sale (980 yen for SAL shipping, 1980 yen for EMS shipping) was for only 24 hours.  If someone (like yours truly) wasn’t checking emails, he would have missed the sale.  I personally think it should have lasted through the weekend to Monday.  *shrugs*

To be fair, because the dollar is worth much less against the yen these days, retailers simply cannot afford to cut prices, even for holiday sales.  They have to pay rent for their warehouse space.  The situation will not improve until the dollar appreciates against the yen.

I am Jealous

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

I’m a big fan of Tekkaman, back in the day when it was aired on TV on Sunday mornings in the early 90s.  So when I see an Astro Toy review on Tekkaman Blade w/ Pegasus figure, I can only admire with envy.   Would I pay 100 bucks plus shipping for it?  Yes, in a heart beat!

Sticker Shock! $140 bucks for 1/8 scale figure

Monday, July 4th, 2011

I dropped by my local anime retailer this weekend, and saw on the shelf a K-On Ritsu Tainaka 1/8 scale figure from Good Smile Company.  The sticker price was 140 bucks.    I can’t imagine spending that kind of money, even though I’m sure the drum set costs a bit more to produce.

Black Friday Buys

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Well, Black Friday 2010 has come and gone, and I bought a lot less than I expected to for this year.  Having failed in getting any K-On Figmas at NYCC 2010, I decided to take advantage of Toyslogic.com Black Friday Special, where you pay full price for an in stock item, and get the second one half off.  Picked up Mio and Tsumugi, which are now in transit.  Woot!

I skipped the Right Stuf’s Black Friday sale, b/c there wasn’t anything I wanted that I don’t already have.  :’(

Kobato Non-Scale Figure from Kotobukiya

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

I saw the Kobato: Kobato Hanato Ani Statue from Kotobukiya on a retailer shelf.  And I have to say I’m impressed by the quality, as far as I could tell by looking inside the box.   I’m not familiar w/ the anime show, so I can’t judge if the figure looks like Kobato or not.  But I do note that the kimono looks fantastic, as is her facial expression.  At $49.99, it’s definitely a bargain if you’re a Kobato fan.

Re: Astro Toy Review of Golgo 13 Figma Deluxe Action Figure

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

I admit to being mildly surprised when the previous reviewer left the Astro Toy column at AnimeNewsNetwork.com.  And I was curious as to what the reviews from the new columnist would look like.  But having read David Cabrera’s review of Golgo 13 Figma Deluxe Action Figure, I offer a hearty congratulations on a well written debut review.

Golgo 13 is a classic anime show about a mild aged hitman, and I think salaried workers see him as an escape from mundane, everyday reality in the office.  I was initially happy to find out that a figma action figure would be released for Golgo 13, but my joy was snuffed out over the $55 price charged at a local retailer for this product.

Cabrera’s column covers all the details of the figma–its flexibility of joints with a jacket on, accessories, and playroom marketed by Max Factory as a “di:stage”.  I am mildly surprised to read the reviewer’s comment that the motel room, which presumably was the reason to charge an extra 15 bucks over the normal $35 or so for a regular figma product, is made out of paper.  So you, the consumer, is supposed to pay 15 bucks more for a basic di:stage and some paper reproductions.

As the reviewer notes, he’s not handy with paper craft, and neither am I.  So to me, the $50 MSRP is a bit overpriced for this release.  And this review has done its job of  supporting my decision to skip buying the Golgo 13 figure.

I’m looking forward to next week’s column!

Fate/ Unlimited Codes Saber Lily ~Golden Caliburn 1/7 scale PVC Figure

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Checking out AAAAnime.com this morning, I couldn’t help but notice a special convention-only release figure of Fate/ Unlimited Codes Saber Lily ~ Golden Caliburn.   This is a white version of the popular Distant Avalon Saber figure from Good Smile Company.  She’s also wearing almost no armor.

I missed out on the previous Distant Avalon figure (I just don’t have room for her to place a pre-order last year).  And I don’t think I’m hard core enough to hire someone to buy the $150 convention release for me (I’m not going to Anime Expo or San Diego Con).  I’m sure that they’ll be sold out by the first day.

Vocaloid Hatsune Miku ‘The World Is Mine’ 1/8 scale PVC Figure

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

I saw on display at a retailer store last month the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku ‘The World Is Mine’ 1/8 scale pvc figure.  And I have to admit it was VERY impressive.  Here you have an adult version of the cute character with ultra long pigtails, in an idol-type of dress.  She’s leaning back, looking supremely confident of herself.  The lettering of the words “The World is Mine” are written on the lower left corner, but quite legible, and more importantly, mistake free.  And just as impressive, from what I saw on the display case, was the paint job.  The irises in Miku’s eyes looked right, and even her fingernails were painted.

If you’re a big Hatsune Miku fan, which I’m not, this is definitely a nice pickup.

$150 for Guyver Imakarum Mirabilis Zoalord Action Figure!@#

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

As a fan of the Guyver anime shows (if you’ve seen the earlier OVA release from the 90s, in addition to the full length TV series), I’m always interested in seeing new products released for Guyver.  But the $150 MSRP for Max Factory’s latest installment of the Guyver action figure series (Zoalord Imakarum Mirabilis)  is very eye popping.  The Guyver I action figure released 2 or 3 years ago went for 50 or 60 bucks, if I remember correctly.  Even factoring in a 90 yen per dollar exchange rate rather than a 110, I still don’t think the retail price should hit three digits.

As it stands, this release is definitely out of my price range.  And I have no choice but to skip it.  :(

Sentai 23 Releasing Blue Drop, Polyphonica, Special A in November

Monday, September 7th, 2009

According to a press release from Sentai 23 Films, several anime shows will be released in N.A. in November: You’re Under Arrest Season 2 Collection 1, Special A Collection 1, Blue Drop Complete Collection, Little Snow Fairy Sugar Collection 2, Polyphonica Complete Collection, Tears To Tiara Collection 1.

Considering that this PR was totally unexpected, and coming on the news of ADV’s demise, it seems to me the company is trying to show consumers that nothing has changed and hot new anime shows will continue to be released despite the presence of Funimation.  As an anime fan, I’m thrilled to see Blue Drop and Polyphonica getting complete set boxed treatment.  It remains to be seen if these $40 releases will have dubbed track as well, or not.  We’ll find out soon enough! :)
